Setting the standard for Zero Waste in New York City luxury real estate development

Bizzi & Partners Development, Aronov Development and Halpern Real Estate Ventures, the development partners behind luxury condominium 565 Broome SoHo, announced today a partnership with Think Zero, a consulting firm specializing in waste reduction and diversion planning and implementation. The partnership is a first between Think Zero and a luxury condominium, setting 565 Broome SoHo on track to become one of Manhattan’s first residential Zero Waste buildings, and a model that can be replicated citywide.

“The partnership with Think Zero is consistent with Bizzi & Partners Development and Renzo Piano Building Workshop’s approach to sustainability at 565 Broome SoHo, including the thoughtful selection of building materials, and a focus on energy efficiency to minimize the building’s impact on the environment. This is the future and we see this as staying ahead of the curve.” said Davide Bizzi, CEO of Bizzi & Partners Development.

Sarah Currie-Halpern is Founder and Partner of Think Zero, an industry leader in waste reduction consulting, as well as Chair of the Manhattan Solid Waste Advisory Board. Prior to Think Zero, Mrs. Currie-Halpern spearheaded the Solid Waste and Zero Waste Programs for the Mayor’s Office of New York City where she was instrumental in the development and implementation of the Zero Waste Section ofOneNYC.

“Setting Zero Waste goals and implementing a Zero Waste program in a large luxury building involves a lot of upfront work and the cooperation of all stakeholders in the building, but the benefits are huge,” said Sarah Currie-Halpern. The building has an opportunity to give back to the local community by being a better neighbor (little to no bags at the curb) and to save money by cutting down on the materials they would have otherwise purchased (for example by switching to water bottle refillers in all amenity spaces and not offering plastic water bottles), all while reducing its environmental footprint. “We look forward to helping 565 Broome SoHo become one of the first Zero Waste residential buildings in Manhattan and rolling out our model to the broader real estate community in the near future.”

The U.S. Zero Waste Business Council (USZWBC) defines Zero Waste as, “achieving over 90% diversion of waste from landfills, incinerators and the environment.” The building’s goal is to reach 90% diversion of waste from landfill and incineration by the anniversary of its first year open. 565 Broome SoHo aims to achieve 90% diversion with Think Zero’s guidance on implementing waste reduction, recycling, and donation programs, Zero Waste amenities, and the establishment of a conscientious culture of creating less waste. Think Zero hopes to work closely with the building’s staff and future occupants to create and implement a process to track waste, enabling 565 Broome SoHo to pursue the first Zero Waste residential building facility certification in Manhattan.

Renzo Piano Building Workshop’s design of 565 Broome SoHo is already pushing the limits of building technology to redefine modern luxury residential living in Manhattan. The exterior is a fully unitized aluminum curtain wall system with low iron insulated glass that is both beautiful and functional, providing UV protection as well as enhancing the building’s energy efficiency. The sweeping lobby features a soaring atrium with a living wall of hanging gardens. 565 Broome SoHo’s commitment to Zero Waste will contribute to New York City’s efforts to send zero waste to landfills by 2030.
